152 // 3 Ways to Be Less Anxious

There’s stress, and then there’s anxiety. Anxiety goes beyond stress – it shuts you down, interferes with your life, and becomes the lens through which you see everything else. It reinforces itself because when you experience life in this way, you then make decisions that inadvertently reinforce those fears, validating the anxiety. Today we’re going over 3 things to learn from people who do not struggle with chronic anxiety.

Don’t invalidate yourself when you feel anxiety

  • People without chronic anxiety don’t berate themselves for experiencing anxiety – they let it happen, and they move on.
  • However, many people with anxiety problems judge and criticize themselves for experiencing anxiety, only making their anxiety worse.
  • When you feel anxious, tell yourself that it is okay to feel that way.
  • Ask yourself: is there anything I can do about this right now? If the answer is yes, do what you can to alleviate yourself of that feeling to the best of your abilities. If the answer is no, try to let the feeling pass and acknowledge that it’s just that – a feeling.

Don’t avoid stress/anxiety-provoking situations

  • Nobody wants to feel anxious, and it makes sense that avoidance and anxiety go hand-in-hand. Avoidance of anxiety-provoking situations is self-reinforcing: anxiety decreases, and there is a sense of relief when something is avoided. You are unknowingly sending a message of relief that you have avoided that scary thing. You validate the fear of something that is not inherently threatening.
  • By avoiding, you reinforce the thought that you can not handle a situation, and using avoidance as a strategy can make your world smaller and smaller until it’s just you and your anxiety

Don’t excessively seek reassurance when feeling anxiety

  • For someone who struggles with anxiety, reassurance can be almost like an addictive drug: it feels good in the moment because it temporarily reduces the anxiety.
  • However, it creates a signal that next time you feel anxious, you have to ease it with more reassurance-seeking, creating a reliance outside of yourself. You don’t learn to tolerate the anxiety independently, depriving yourself of the lesson that anxiety will eventually fade.
  • It might be hard to resist that urge to seek reassurance. The best way to combat this is to hold off for as long as you can, and then when you reach a point of feeling like you have to have some reassurance, let whoever you go to for that reassurance know that, although done with good intentions, it does not serve you long term.
